Australia 2-0 Türkiye: Irankunda and Beach Star as Socceroos Shake Up Group D

Nestory Irankunda became Australia's youngest-ever World Cup goalscorer and debutant goalkeeper Patrick Beach made eight saves as the Socceroos beat Türkiye 2-0 in Vancouver to draw level with the USA at the top of Group D.

Australia came to BC Place in Vancouver as the underdogs in Group D and left with three points, a clean sheet, and a direct collision course with the United States in Seattle. Nestory Irankunda's 27th-minute goal and Connor Metcalfe's second-half strike were enough to beat Türkiye 2-0 on Sunday, in a result that immediately reshapes the group's title race.

Irankunda, 20 years old and playing for Watford in the Championship, became Australia's youngest-ever goalscorer at a World Cup when he broke through on goal in the 27th minute, pursued by three Turkish defenders, and fired low past goalkeeper Mert Günok. The goal appeared to deflate a Turkish side that had started with confidence; Metcalfe confirmed the win in the 75th minute with a low, powerful drive from range that Günok could not keep out. The scoreline was clear; the manner of it, even more striking.

Much of the credit belonged to Patrick Beach. The 24-year-old, handed a surprise debut in goal ahead of the more experienced Mat Ryan, produced a performance that will be talked about long after this group stage. He made eight saves — the most by any goalkeeper in the tournament so far — and his composure throughout a match in which Türkiye generated enormous pressure gave Australia's defence the confidence they needed. Beach also launched the counter-attack that led to Irankunda's opener.

Türkiye's numbers reflect a performance that deserved considerably more. Vincenzo Montella's side had 30 shots in total and 72 per cent of possession, an attacking force that simply could not find a way through. Australia made 55 clearances — a figure that tells its own story about the organisation under Tony Popovic — and held on with a combination of physical commitment and Beach's intervention at every turn.

The consequence for Group D is immediate. Australia now sit level with co-hosts the United States at the top — both on three points after their openers — ahead of a meeting in Seattle next Friday that has the hallmarks of a decisive fixture. The U.S. that dismantled Paraguay 4-1 against the Socceroos who just pulled off one of the tournament's early surprises: Group D, looking predictable at the draw, now has real jeopardy at the top.
