USA 2-1 Australia: Pulisic and Balogun Strike in Seattle to Put USMNT on Verge of Knockouts

Christian Pulisic and Folarin Balogun both found the net as the USA beat Australia 2-1 in Seattle, moving to six points in Group D and all but securing their place in the round of 32.

The United States continued their perfect start to a home World Cup on Wednesday, beating Australia 2-1 in Seattle to all but secure their passage to the knockout stage. Goals from Christian Pulisic and Folarin Balogun ensured the co-hosts moved to six points in Group D, sparking scenes of jubilation at a rain-slicked Lumen Field.

Pulisic opened the scoring in the 14th minute, converting a penalty after he was brought down in the box following a driving run. The captain's second goal of the tournament provided the ideal platform for a U.S. side that looked sharper and more cohesive than in their opening victory over Paraguay. Australia, however, remained a threat on the counter and found an equaliser against the run of play when Riley McGree's deflected strike looped over Matt Turner in the 31st minute.

The winner arrived early in the second half through Balogun, who finished clinically after a threaded pass from Yunus Musah. The AS Monaco striker's first World Cup goal was a just reward for a performance of tireless movement that repeatedly stretched the Australian defence. Mauricio Pochettino's side held firm under late pressure to secure a result that means they can likely afford to rotate for their final group match against Türkiye.

The victory leaves the USMNT top of Group D with six points, while Australia will need a result against Paraguay to keep their own hopes of advancement alive. For the hosts, the "Seattle Sound" of 68,000 fans celebrated a night that suggested this team is growing in confidence with every game on home soil.
