Czechia 1-1 South Africa: Mokoena's Late Penalty Salvages a Point in Atlanta

Teboho Mokoena converted a penalty in the 83rd minute to cancel out Michal Sadilek's early opener, leaving Czechia and South Africa level at one point apiece in a wide-open Group A.

Czechia and South Africa shared the points in a dramatic Group A draw in Atlanta on Thursday, with Teboho Mokoena's 83rd-minute penalty cancelling out an early Michal Sadilek strike to leave both sides on one point apiece after two matches.

Sadilek gave Czechia the perfect start, finishing inside the opening six minutes after a flowing move down the right exploited space behind South Africa's back line. For long periods afterward, Czechia carried the greater attacking threat, with Patrik Schick and Vladimír Darida both fashioning chances that goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was called upon to deal with, but Hugo Broos's side grew steadily into the contest as the match wore on.

The equaliser arrived from the penalty spot in the 83rd minute, after substitute Pavel Šulc was penalised for handball inside the area. Mokoena sent goalkeeper Matěj Kovář the wrong way to convert, sparking jubilant celebrations among the South African support inside the stadium. Broos was candid afterward about his side's slow start, saying it was "a pity" to have fallen behind so early given that everyone in the camp was aware of Czechia full-back Vladimír Coufal's long throw-ins, only for South Africa to be caught out by exactly that threat.

The result leaves Group A delicately poised heading into the final round of fixtures. With Mexico having already wrapped up top spot after beating South Korea earlier on the same day, Czechia and South Africa both sit on a single point and remain in contention for the section's second qualification berth — or a place among the tournament's best third-placed teams — adding extra jeopardy to both nations' closing group matches.

For Czechia, the result is a frustrating one given their dominance for large stretches, while South Africa's late leveller continues a tournament in which Bafana Bafana have repeatedly shown resilience after going behind. Both sides will now turn their attention to their remaining fixtures knowing a win is very likely required to advance.
